Module 1 – Forex Foundations
Lesson 1.5
The Forex Market Is Open 24 Hours: How Trading Sessions Work
Estimated Reading Time: 12 Minutes
Difficulty: Beginner
Why This Lesson Matters
In Lesson 1.4 – What Makes Currency Prices Move?, you learned that currency prices are influenced by economic events, interest rates, inflation, and market expectations.
However, another important factor affects Forex trading every day:
Time.
One of the unique features of the Forex market is that it operates 24 hours a day, five days a week.
This often surprises beginners.
If there is no central building where Forex trading takes place, how can the market remain open around the clock?
Understanding trading sessions will help you know when the market is most active, when price movements are strongest, and which times are generally better for beginners to trade.
This lesson will help you avoid one of the most common beginner mistakes: trading during periods when the market is unusually quiet or unnecessarily volatile.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Explain why the Forex market operates 24 hours a day.
Identify the four major Forex trading sessions.
Understand when market activity is highest.
Recognize why session overlaps are important.
Choose suitable trading times as a beginner.
Introduction
Imagine a relay race.
As one runner finishes, another runner begins.
The race never stops because the runners take turns.
The Forex market works in a similar way.
When the business day ends in one financial center, another major financial center is opening.
As trading activity moves from one region of the world to another, the market continues operating almost continuously from Monday morning in Asia until Friday evening in the United States.
This is why Forex is often called a 24-hour market.
Why Is Forex Open 24 Hours?
Unlike a traditional stock exchange, Forex does not operate from a single physical location.
Instead, it is an over-the-counter (OTC) market, which means trading occurs electronically through banks, financial institutions, brokers, and traders around the world.
As different countries enter their business day, Forex trading activity shifts across global financial centers.
The market effectively follows the sun around the world.
The Four Major Trading Sessions
The Forex market is commonly divided into four major sessions.
Table 1.5.1 — Major Forex Trading Sessions
Session | Main Financial Center | General Activity |
|---|---|---|
Sydney Session | Australia | Moderate |
Tokyo Session | Japan | Moderate |
London Session | United Kingdom | High |
New York Session | United States | High |
These sessions occur every trading day and together keep the market operating continuously.
The Sydney Session
The Sydney session begins the global Forex trading week.
It is generally one of the quieter sessions because fewer major financial institutions are active compared with London and New York.
Characteristics:
lower liquidity
smaller price movements
fewer major economic announcements
This session is often less attractive for beginners who want clearer market activity.
The Tokyo Session
The Tokyo session represents the major Asian trading period.
During this session, currencies such as:
JPY (Japanese Yen)
AUD (Australian Dollar)
NZD (New Zealand Dollar)
often receive increased attention.
Characteristics:
moderate liquidity
moderate volatility
stronger activity in Asian currency pairs
The London Session
The London session is one of the most important Forex sessions in the world.
A large percentage of global Forex trading volume passes through London.
Characteristics:
very high liquidity
strong price movements
numerous institutional participants
significant economic news releases
For many traders, this is the most active and attractive session of the day.
The New York Session
The New York session is also extremely important because it includes the world's largest financial economy.
Characteristics:
high liquidity
significant volatility
major US economic announcements
strong movement in USD-related pairs
Because the US dollar appears in many major currency pairs, the New York session often produces substantial market activity.
Why Session Overlaps Matter
The most active periods in Forex occur when two major trading sessions are open at the same time.
The most important overlap is:
London + New York
This overlap usually produces:
the highest liquidity
the largest trading volume
stronger price movements
tighter spreads
better trade execution
Many professional traders focus heavily on this period because the market is often most efficient.
A Simple Timeline
Figure 1.5.1 — Global Forex Trading Sessions
Global Forex trading sessions
Sydney
Australia
Session opens the trading week and is usually one of the quieter periods.
Tokyo
Japan
Asian-market activity becomes more noticeable, especially in JPY, AUD, and NZD pairs.
London
United Kingdom
Liquidity and trading volume increase significantly as major institutions become active.
New York
United States
USD-related pairs often become especially active, with major US economic releases influencing the market.
London-New York overlap
This overlap is usually the busiest period of the trading day, with the strongest liquidity, trading volume, and price movement.
The overlap between London and New York is usually the busiest period of the trading day.
Which Session Is Best for Beginners?
For most beginners, the London session and the London-New York overlap are usually the best places to start.
Why?
Because they generally offer:
higher liquidity
tighter spreads
clearer market movement
better educational resources and analysis
easier trade execution
These conditions make it easier to learn how the market behaves.
A Practical Example
Suppose EUR/USD is being traded during the London session.
Because both European and international traders are active, the pair often experiences stronger and more consistent movement than it might during a very quiet period.
A beginner studying charts during the London session is more likely to observe meaningful market behavior than during a period of extremely low activity.
Nigerian Perspective
Nigeria operates in a time zone that aligns reasonably well with the London session, which is an advantage for many Nigerian traders.
For someone with a normal daytime schedule, the London session is often easier to monitor than the Asian session, which may occur during late-night or early-morning hours.
This makes pairs such as EUR/USD and GBP/USD practical choices for many Nigerian beginners.
The Cost of This Mistake
Trading During Extremely Quiet Market Hours
Many beginners trade simply because they have free time.
Unfortunately, some of those periods have:
low liquidity
wider spreads
slow price movement
unpredictable behavior
Better Habit
Plan your trading around active sessions, especially the London session and the London-New York overlap, until you gain more experience.
FX Mentor Insight™
A good trading strategy performs best when the market is actually moving.
FX Mentor Principle™ #31
Trade when opportunity is present, not merely when you are available.
Lesson Summary
The Forex market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week because trading activity moves across global financial centers.
The four major sessions are:
Sydney
Tokyo
London
New York
The most active periods usually occur during session overlaps, especially London and New York.
For most beginners, focusing on the London session and major currency pairs provides a more favorable learning environment.
